Michael Kiwanuka’s concert was initially due during the 2020 Jazz à Vienne Festival but along with many other events, his performance was cancelled. As we could not find a report date for the 2021 edition, we’ve rescheduled his long-awaited performance outside the festival. We are happy to announce Michael Kiwanuka will come to Vienne for a unique concert in France, during the summer concerts in the Roman Theatre. The band Black Pumas will also perform for a special night devoted to soul music, shared energy and togetherness.

Michael Kiwanuka is only 33, yet he is already well-rooted in the musical landscape of the 21st century. His style is deeply bound to soul, but not constrained by it. His timeless, universal music ventures well beyond the boundaries of genres. This young musician from the Muswell Hill area of London was born from Ugandan parents. There’s no faulting his song writing skills, but his voice is what struck those who first heard him. It is unique, deep, moving, warm, as if haunted by his African ancestors and African-American spiritual brothers, from Bill Withers to Terry Callier to Otis Redding. In Kiwanuka, his latest eponymous album (nominated for the 2020 Grammys), Michael invented avant-garde folk music accessible to all ears. His lyrics are to the standard of his music and several songs are already classics.

This is the story of an unexpected meeting between two artists in Austin, Texas, which gave birth to a magical connection and eventually, in 2017, to the band Black Pumas. Eric Burton, charismatic singer and songwriter, and Adrian Quesada, guitarist and producer, breathe new life into a music filled with energy and sensuality in the spirits of Motown soul, Neil Young’s ambient folk and West Coast hip-hop. Their eponymous album Black Pumas delves into this legacy but never copies or fakes retro. Nominated 3 times for the 2020 Grammy Awards, the band is sold out everywhere they go, from North America to Europe. Better not miss this one-off opportunity!
